Effective August 2019, the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee revised the math requirements. These changes have come about from UW Colleges becoming part of UW Milwaukee and due to the UW-System Math Initiative.
The new requirement for UWM students is CGS MAT 105X Intro to College Algebra. This set has recently been revised to include components of the previous MAT 110X College Algebra competency set. MAT 110X is now MAT 116X. Prerequisite: Math Placement Level 20, which is earned by any of the following: (a) Level 20 or 26 on Math Placement Test; (b) Grade of C or better in Math 094, 095, or 098; or (c) ACT math subscore of 24 or higher. Additional information on Math Placement Levels and Scores can be found here. Students still can take CGS MAT 116X in addition to CGS MAT 105X.
Who should take which math class?
If your plan is to be finished with your education at the conclusion of your Flex degree, it’s possible that taking CGS MAT 105X Intro to College Algebra will be the only math class you’ll need. However, if you plan on earning an advanced degree, you may want to take CGS MAT 116X College Algebra and/or CGS MAT 215X Elementary Statistics. Check the advanced degree requirements and speak with your Academic Success Coach.
