Associate of Arts & Sciences Core Requirements

Core Requirements | 6 Credits

You must satisfy 3 credits in English and 3 credits in mathematics through the following courses, placement test scores, or transfer credit. You need only to complete one of the below math options.

CGS MAT 102x Mathematical Literacy for College Students II

This course develops an integrated approach to numeracy, proportional reasoning, algebraic reasoning, and functions.

Students will either complete a placement exam or transfer in an appropriate prerequisite to qualify as ready to attempt mastery of competencies for this core course. 

Note: A student only has to do either CGS MAT 102x or CGS MAT 105x, to satisfy the core requirement – your adviser will help you determine based on your placement score and goals.

Prerequisites

  • Placement test scores, AP exam, CLEP scores, ACT/SAT scores
  • Transfer credit

CGS MAT 105x Introduction to College Algebra

Definition of function and sequence; linear and nonlinear functions and graphs including logarithmic and exponential functions; systems of linear equations and Gauss-Jordan method; theory of polynomial equations; conic sections and optional topics such as mathematical induction, matrix solution of linear systems and Cramer’s rule.

You will either complete a placement exam or transfer in an appropriate prerequisite to qualify as ready to attempt mastery of competencies for this core course.

Note: A student only has to do either CGS MAT 102x or CGS MAT 105x, to satisfy the core requirement – your adviser will help you determine based on your placement score and goals.

Note: Transfers to UW-Parkside as MAT 111

Prerequisites

  • MAT 092, 098, or Placement Test Score, AP exam, CLEP, ACT/SAT scores
  • Transfer credit equivalencies

CGS ENG 102x Critical Writing, Reading, and Research II

A composition course focusing on researched academic writing that presents information, ideas, and arguments. Emphasis will be on the writing process, critical thinking, and critical reading.

Students will either complete a placement exam or transfer in an appropriate prerequisite to qualify as ready to attempt mastery of competencies for this core course.

Note: Transfers to UW-Parkside as ENG 101

Prerequisites

  • CGS ENG 101x College Writing and Critical Reading
  • Transfer credit equivalent to English 101
  • Placement Test, AP exam, CLEP
