English
As an incoming UW-Milwuakee student, you will initially be placed into CGS ENG 101x (College Writing and Critical Reading), unless you have earned prior transfer credit or test scores that place you beyond CGS ENG 101x.
You may have the option to place into CGS ENG 102x (Critical Writing, Reading, and Research) by completing the Guided English Placement (GEP) or by providing ACT/SAT scores (see Prior Test Scores section below). Students must take CGS ENG 102 to graduate unless they earned equivalent credit in transfer, an appropriate ACT/SAT score, or a portfolio review.
English Placement Testing Option for UW-Parkside Business Administration Students
Option for admitted UW-Parkside Business Administration students only.
See the section at the bottom of this page on how to use ACT or SAT scores for placement purposes.
Incoming transfer, re-admit, or re-entry degree-seeking Business Administration students that have been accepted to the University of Wisconsin-Parkside but do NOT have transferable English credit may complete their general education requirements through the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (see UWM Guided English Placement Test for placement).
Enrolled Business Administration students with no transferrable English credit may opt to test out of English by taking the UW System Regional English Placement Test.
- If a score of 650-850 is earned, you would be exempt from the English requirement at UW-Parkside.
- Any placement score below 650 would require you to satisfy the General Education Program at UW-Milwaukee (see UWM Placement Testing program).
- If you are unsure if you have transferable Math and English credit, please email placement@uwp.edu from your RANGER email account.
How to Access the English Regional Placement Exam
Note this option is available for Business Administration students enrolled at UW-Pairside only.
UW-Milwaukee does NOT participate in the English Regional Placement Exam program.
To access the Placement Exams, please follow the steps below:
- Navigate to the UW Center for Placement Testing website
- Click the “Registration Form” link. You will need to log in using your Parkside username (everything before @rangers.uwp.edu in your email address) and password.
- Click the “Registration Form” link once more to be taken to the registration page.
- Fill out the registration form using your Ranger Mail as the email address.
- Check your email to enter the registration code that was sent to you. Make sure to check your junk/spam folder.
- After you enter the registration code, you will be sent an email from candidatesupport@scantron.com with instructions on how to take your placement exams online. This may take up to 20 minutes to receive. Again, make sure to check your junk/spam folder.
- Your email with testing instructions will include the link to the testing website, your username, and your password.
- Navigate to the testing website using the link in the instructions email and enter the username and password sent in your instruction email.

What is the UW Milwaukee Guided English Placement (GEP)?
The Guided English Placement (GEP) is an alternative to using standardized test scores for placement into your required English composition courses.
If you have never taken the ACT/SAT, or are not satisfied with your placement via your ACT/SAT scores, you can utilize our free online GEP to attain placement into your required composition course. The GEP is not a standardized test and there are no right or wrong answers. You will be asked a variety of questions about your educational experiences, writing & reading skills, and academic mindset. You will also be given reading and writing samples to reflect upon; no writing is required from you.
Through the GEP, you can reflect on your composition strengths, understand the expectations of the courses, and offer your input on the class you believe will lead to your greatest success. In addition to how you’d place yourself, we’ll be integrating your experiences, your GPA and your learning dispositions to help place you in the course that best suits your needs. The GEP takes about 30-60 minutes to complete.
You cannot fully place out of your English requirement via the GEP.
Guided English Placement YouTube Video
Although the YouTube video is geared toward new freshmen, it does provide a nice overview of the GEP assessment. As a transfer student, you can work with your Success Coach on planning when to take your required English course(s) for your degree.
Is the GEP required?
No, the GEP is not required. All incoming students are placed into CGS ENG 101x. If you do well on your Guided English Placement (GEP), you may be placed into CGS ENG 102x. However, if your GEP reflects an assessment below CGS ENG 101x, you will be required to complete remedial coursework outside of the program. You can discuss with your Success Coach a decision on whether to take the GEP. If you choose to complete the GEP, you CAN NOT retake the assessment.
How do you prepare for the GEP?
No preparation is required! This is not a test, and there are no right or wrong answers. This is a tool that helps you recall your past experiences with writing and then communicate those experiences to us in various ways. Things you will find helpful:
- Find a quiet place where you can focus and reflect.
- Set aside 30-60 minutes to complete the survey. You will be able to save progress and return to the survey if you’re unable to complete it in one sitting.
- Be honest with yourself when answering the survey questions.
You will review typical college-level readings, writings, and assignments to gain insight into what will be expected of you at different levels of placement. Assessing yourself honestly will give you the greatest chance to be successful in the class you choose.
How to Register for the GEP
Click the “Take the GEP ” link to start the process. If you log into the GEP site below and do not see the option to complete the GEP, please email our Director & Chair of First-Year Composition, Shevaun Watson, at watsonse@uwm.edu to request access. If you have lost your epanther ID or password or have other issues logging in, please visit our epanther ID help page or call the UWM IT department at 414-229-4040.
- You will be able to complete the GEP on a computer or mobile device.
- It takes approximately 1-2 weeks for results to be processed.
- Please plan to complete the GEP as soon as possible!

Writing Requirement at UW-Milwaukee
English placement is determined by the English or Evidence-Based Reading and Writing Score (ERWS) on your ACT/SAT, prior college credit earned in English courses, or by completing the online Guided English Placement. The scores on these tests place you into courses that will satisfy your General Education Requirement (GER) known as the Oral and Written Communication (OWC) Competency Part A for those seeking a bachelor’s degree or your core requirement in writing for those seeking an associate’s degree. As an incoming UW Flexible Option student, you will be placed into CGS ENG 101x (College Writing and Critical Reading), unless you have earned prior transfer credit or test scores that place you beyond CGS ENG 101x.
Questions?
Please contact Professor Shevaun Watson, Director of Composition, Shevaun Watson with questions or concerns.
Math
If you did not earn transferrable credit equivalent to CGS MAT 102x, or achieve a comparable Math Placement Score, you may need to complete the Panther Math Prep assessment prior to enrolling in a math course at UW-Milwaukee.
- CGS MAT 102x (Mathematical Literacy for College Student II) satisfies Part A of the Quantitative Literacy requirement. Depending on your program of study, this may be the only math course that you need to take to graduate.
- It is strongly recommended that you enroll in math or satisfy your math requirement (through transfer, ACT/SAT score or other methods) by the end of your fourth subscription period. Your Success Coach will help you develop a plan for completing your math requirement.
Panther Math Prep (PMP)
The Panther Math Prep (PMP) is free, online, self-paced learning environment using software called ALEKS. After you complete the online registration, you can utilize the tool to assess and enhance your math skills prior to taking your math placement test.
You do not need to schedule the assessment, as you can take the online placement test whenever it is convenient for you. We strongly encourage everyone to assess where they have currently placed in math and consider utilizing this opportunity to prepare themselves for retesting in the hopes of earning a higher math placement. Depending on your math placement and intended area of study, earning a higher math placement could allow you to progress toward graduation more quickly and save you time and tuition costs by passing lower-level math courses.
If you have never taken an ACT/SAT or math placement test, you can use this program to satisfy your math placement requirement.
Take a video tour of the ALEKS program to see what to expect.

Testing and Retakes
- Initial Placement– It is important that you follow the registration instructions under the How to Register section. Log in to the online math tool called ALEKS to take an initial video proctored assessment. A member of the math department will review your test session. If they validate your session then your results will be sent to your UWM PAWS account. If you are happy with your results, you can use that score for your math placement. This initial test will also allow you to see where your areas for improvement lie. If you would like to try and improve upon your placement level proceed to step two.
If the math department finds any issues with your test session that indicates testing guidelines were not followed, your test attempt will be recorded with a score of zero; and you will be emailed a notification to retest. - Prep & Retest– Utilize the review and preparation resources within the ALEKS program to refresh your skills and practice math concepts. You can test up to a total of five times; each test is an online video proctored assessment. How much time you spend prepping is up to you, but we recommend you work at least 8 hours and complete at least 80% of your prep course before retesting for the first time.
Is math required for a degree?
Regardless of your major, all UWM bachelor’s and associate level students need to satisfy mathematics coursework as part of their degree requirement. The competency requirements for GERs and core requirements are designed to assure basic proficiency in oral and written communication, quantitative literacy, and foreign language. You may also have additional, program-specific math course(s) required beyond the general education level to earn your degree.
Math placement is designed to place you into a course that will satisfy the Quantitative Literacy Competency Part A (QLA) of your required GERs or the core requirement in mathematics. It is strongly recommended that you complete this degree requirement within your first 4 subscription periods of enrollment.
