Pre-licensure ADNs Now Eligible for RN to BSN Program

January 27, 2022 -

Associate Degree Nurse (ADN) students who haven’t yet received their RN license can now enroll in the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee RN to BSN program offered through the UW Flexible Option. This change in enrollment requirement from UW-Milwaukee, allows students to get started on their BSN sooner.

These ADN students are eligible to take a variety of nursing courses offered through UW-Milwaukee Nursing program. The UW Flexible Option is a competency-based pathway to earning your BSN that lets you control the pace of your learning and take advantage of your existing experience.

UWM RN to BSN Completion Programs Director Nicole Simonson, DNP, RN, shared, “UWM has worked hard to meet our students where they are at in their learning and career journey. We understand that completing a Bachelor of Science in nursing is more than an expectation of an employer, but rather a self-fulfilling goal for many nurses who have to work while going to school. Allowing pre-licensure nurses the ability to take BSN completion courses in their final year of school, gives them the jump start to achieve a BSN quicker.”

Finish what you started—complete your bachelor’s degree in nursing

May 18, 2020 -

By Lisa Mihlbauer, MSN, RN, IBCLC, CNE
Director of RN-to-BSN Completion Programs
University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee College of Nursing

Why earn a BSN?

Your Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) program prepared you well for the NCLEX-RN licensure examination and a nursing practice position. You are doing well, so what more can a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) do for you?

A BSN prepares you for higher level positions, such as nurse manager, nurse educator, and care coordinator. The BSN is the next step on your way to pursuing an advanced degree that qualifies you for positions of leadership, administration, or higher education. It qualifies you to seek enrollment in MN, MSN, DNP, FNP, and PhD programs. A BSN curriculum builds on the skills and knowledge of the ADN curriculum, focusing on developing leadership, reflective practice, evidence-based practice and systems-thinking skills.

If you work for—or want to work for—an organization that has Magnet status, or is pursuing Magnet status, the BSN is especially important. Magnet institutions strive to have 80 percent of their nursing workforce to be prepared at the BSN level. In addition, the IOM Future of Nursing report (IOM, 2011) recommends that 80 percent of RN’s have a BSN degree. This staffing goal is driven by evidence. Multiple studies have confirmed that the education level of the nursing staff positively impacts patient outcomes.

Choosing an RN-to-BSN Program

When choosing an RN-BSN program, it is important to carefully consider your own needs and the options available in the programs you are considering. Here are some important things to look at as you consider RN-to-BSN program options:

  • Accreditation—Is the program accredited and by whom? How long has the program existed?
  • Cost of tuition—What is the per-credit cost and the overall program cost? Can you apply for a scholarship or receive tuition reimbursement through your employer?
  • Admission criteria—What are the admission criteria for the program?
  • Prerequisites—What pre-requisite courses are required for the baccalaureate degree?
  • Availability of advising services—Can you meet one-to-one with an advisor?
  • Time to completion—What is the average time to completion? Is it possible to move at a faster or a slower pace to accommodate your needs?
  • Clinical hours—What are the type and number of clinical hours required?
  • Flexibility—Are there online, face-to-face and other course options? What is the length of each course? Can you combine course options?
  • Personal career path—What are your career goals? Do you want to work in nursing management, education or practice?
  • Availability of graduate education options—Are there graduate education options at this school?

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree offered through the UW Flexible Option can help you finish what you started. Learn how.

UW Flexible Option RN to BSN Degree Earns 2019 Innovations in Nursing Education Award

November 1, 2019 -

The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) awarded the 2019 Innovations in Professional Nursing Education Award for Public Colleges and Universities to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Bachelor of Science in Nursing program offered through the UW Flexible Option. This award recognizes the outstanding work of AACN member schools to re-envision traditional models for nursing education and lead programmatic change.

“This is truly an honor for UW-Milwaukee College of Nursing,” said Kim Litwack, Dean, UW-Milwaukee School of Nursing. “The UW Flexible Option provides an innovative way Wisconsin’s busy nurses can build on their nursing experience while expanding their critical thinking, leadership, and reflective practice skills.”

The UW Flexible Option was designed for busy working professionals as an alternative to the traditional campus-based classroom and other online formats. As a student, you can log in when it’s convenient for you—maybe after the kids go to bed, or on your day off—and complete assessments to show you’ve mastered the material.

The competency-based curriculum is designed to build on your expertise. The knowledge and skills you’ve gained in your career may help you progress through this direct assessment program faster.

Since the UW Flexible Option is not a traditional term-based program, you can get started on the first day of any month! You work with knowledgeable faculty who respect your expertise and you will also have a dedicated mentor to help you in the program. Plus, there’s no group work!

“With UW Flexible Option, you’ll earn your degree from the prestigious UW-Milwaukee College of Nursing, the largest in Wisconsin,” Dean Litwack said. “And, you learn from the same exceptional faculty who teach in our on-campus programs—a college with active practitioners.”

Just like traditional UW-Milwaukee nursing programs, this UW Flexible Option program is accredited through the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education and is approved through the Wisconsin State Board of Nursing.

In order to be considered for the award, UW-Milwaukee demonstrated that the UW Flexible Option RN-to-BSN degree is a programmatic innovation and:

  • Has executed and sustained this innovation for at least 12 months
  • Serves as a catalyst for change within the curriculum and/or educational mission of the institution
  • Has the potential for replication and dissemination
  • Involves teams of faculty when possible and is consistent with AACN’s mission and vision
  • Demonstrates advancement of professional nursing education

UW Flexible Option Business Degree Among Most Affordable in the Country

August 16, 2019 -

When deciding to go back to school to earn your bachelor’s degree, you have to answer many questions. Which school should I choose? What format—online, face-to-face, or a combination? Is it accredited? How will I fit it into my already busy schedule? Is it affordable?

Finding an affordable program is now easier. The UW Flexible Option Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree has been named one of the top 10 most affordable online bachelor’s degrees in business in the country in a recent ranking by GreatBusinessSchools.org. In addition to being affordable, programs must be regionally accredited and have established a national reputation for quality, reflected in rankings and student reviews.

This University of Wisconsin-Parkside business degree is accredited by AACSB International—the leading business program accrediting body, and the UW Flexible Option degree is the only competency-based program in an AACSB accredited business school, assuring you of its high quality.

“Less than 5 percent of business programs worldwide have earned the prestigious AACSB accreditation,” said Dr. Dirk Baldwin, dean of the UW-Parkside College of Business, Economics, and Computing.

An alternative to traditional classroom and online formats, the UW Flexible Option program allows busy adult learners like you to start their studies in any month and work at their own pace—100% online—when and where their schedules allow.

“Before the UW Flexible Option, business students—especially working professionals—had to find a way to fit their schedules to the class time,” said Dr. Suresh Chalasani, professor of business at UW-Parkside. “The UW Flexible Option allows students to work at their own pace and build upon their existing knowledge to pass assessments more quickly. This is truly a transformative educational opportunity.”

UW-Parkside faculty designed an integrated curriculum in the UW Flexible Option business degree to eliminate unnecessary redundancies that may be found in other programs and gives you a head start on real-world working scenarios. You’ll learn the fundamental business management skills that make you a valuable asset across industries, while working with your faculty and academic success coaches.

“In the ever-changing world of business, UW-Parkside faculty keep pace with industry trends through research, working with local businesses, and consulting,” Baldwin said.
